At the end of the last century, the Handel/Halvorsen Passacaglia was made famous by the legendary duo of Itzhak Perlman (violin) and Pinchas Zukerman (viola), who not only recorded the work, but frequently performed it live. In our modern times, this awe-inspiring duo of dazzling virtuosity is often played by violin/cello duos. In this performance, CPO concertmaster, Philip Martens, will perform it with his brother, Peter, the principal cellist of the CPO. Then CPO winds, Louisa Theart (flute), Carin Bam (oboe), Danielle Rossouw (clarinet), Lieze Nel (French horn), Arno Steyn (bassoon) will perform a charming quintet by one of Beethoven’s Slavic compatriots, Antonin Reicha. Mozart’s iconic clarinet quintet is a work of sublime beauty that needs no introduction. This performance will feature the CPO’s principal clarinetist, Féroll-Jon Davids.
