Cellist Rosamund Roth, who joined the CPO in July 2022,  was born in Pretoria into a musical and artistic family, and started her musical education at the age of three. At Pro Arte Alphen Park High School for the Arts in Pretoria, she specialised first in art before switching to music, to focus on the cello and pursuing a career in musical performance. Her studies took her to Stellenbosch University, where she studied cello under Magdalena Roux, often performing as ad hoc with the CPO.  She also studied Latin and English literature at the University of Stellenbosch but chose the cello. She later followed the cello to Switzerland, where she studied under renowned cellist Roel Dieltiens at the University of the Arts in Zürich. After completing her studies she was active in Switzerland both as a teacher and a performer, having won the prize for best pedagogy student in her year and soon after, teaching jobs at music schools in St. Gallen as well as Appenzell, in addition to her private Students in Zürich. Between 2016 and 2022 she played in the Zürcher Kammerphilharmonie, where she was later appointed co-principal cello.  More recently she has discovered a deep passion for the Viola da Gamba, which she has been studying privately with Paolo Pandolfo in Basel. Rosamund is a keen ensemble player, and happily crosses genres into Baroque, jazz, rock, and folk, anything really, she says. She is happy to be back in “this vibrant and diverse city, ready to be inspired by and add to the wonderful creative energy buzzing through these streets! It’s an honour to join this illustrious and passionate orchestra,” she says.
